L.A. Beat Swap Meet
I'm not sure where I first saw the flier for the Beat Swap Meet Record Show. I think it might have been in Wax Poetics Magazine or maybe it was Myspace sometime in early 2008, I don't really remember. What i do remember is thinking how the flier made this show sound like it centers around all the music I collect. You see, BSM is exclusively about urban music. This would mean nothing but soul, funk, rap, reggae, jazz, electro, breaks, & samples. I finally made it to my first show on their 1 year anniversary. Me and the homie Drunk Jeff pulled up to the Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown L.A. to roam among the purest of record collectors, producers, and vinyl Dj's. Robby Utmos , the founder of BSM, made us feel right at home after driving 6 hours from Phoenix. We arrived at 11am and dug until 6pm at the shows end. I walked away with a full 2 crates of pure butter! That first show we attended covered both floors inside of the club but has expanded over the years to not only the outside of the club but now wraps around the building with thousands in attendance. The show also outgrew just the dealing of records and is now more of a hip hop festival which includes clothing, art, food, yoga, live dj's and bands, rap cyphers, b-boy cyphers, production battles, open turntables, and sightings of hip hop royalty. I have missed only a few shows over the years and have made some super-homies at this event. This is no doubt the best record show I have ever been a part of. Check them out at www.beatswapmeet.com
Thank You PHIFE DAWG!
In 1996 I remember being backstage at the Smokin Groove Tour on it's stop in Milwaukee. Hours before the show start I see Phife walk out of one of the tour buses. He's wearing a Greenbay Packers jersey, green shorts, green Nikes, and one of those old school "Cat in the Hat" hats(green & white). He "pimp walks" away,Phife Dawg style! Later that evening,I caught up with him and asked if he could sign a few of my Tribe records including the new released "Beats, Rhymes, & Life" Lp. In amazment,he snatched the Lp out of my hand and begins to study it. He told me it was the first time he had seen his new Lp in it's vinyl form. That was kinda cool.
I'm happy i got to see A Tribe Called Quest perform several times over the years. One of my earliest memories was seeing them at LOLLAPALOOZA in 1994 with George Clinton and the Beastie Boys.
I got to open up for Phife the last time he performed here in Phoenix. The show was packed and classic as usual. He rocked lots of his solo joints, some newer unreleased songs, as well as the classic Tribe jams.
In Feb 2014 I was in Michigan for some family stuff and it just happened to be "Dilla Day" in Detroit. Phife was a guest host. He performed "Bend Ova", spoke about his experiences of befriending and working with J Dilla, and premiered the video for his latest song "Dear Dilla". The crowd went crazy!
Thank You PHIFE DAWG!
The Kali Tribe
Some of the hardest underground rap out of Milwaukee in the early 90's. This is the only group that i own the Vinyl, cassette, and Cd releases of. Formally known as Def Kali,I remember a show at the Unicorn in downtown Milwaukee where Dj Lando Lan murdered the show on the turntables. You need this rare 12" in your collection.
Eye Candy-Patrice Rushen
Considered to be one of the worlds top R & B and Jazz pianists, this sista needs nothing more then my last name. Since that will never happen i'll settle for staring at her album covers and rocking her tapes in my walkman.
